UIDP Academy: Measuring Value Workshop

September 25, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - September 26, 2017 @ 11:30 am EDT

Developing and Using Metrics to Measure Innovation Partnership Value

This workshop will be held at UIDP25 in Detroit, MI. In this workshop, we will hear from industry and company representatives who have developed measurement systems to show the value of their partnerships as well as demonstrate and communicate the value they create to their larger community ecosystems.

Workshop Overview

Both Corporate and University entities are under increasing pressure to demonstrate the value created by their activities. For the Corporate entity, demonstration of the tangible value created by university partnerships as well as linkage to corporate responsibility initiatives is essential for the long-term success of an external partnership program. For University partners demonstration of the value created by partnering work is also important, but larger issues such as contribution to economic development and support of regional activities is gaining increasing attention.  In this workshop we will look at existing models used in measuring value creation by research activities, how these can be applied to individual situations and the use of these metrics to communicate the value and results from the partnership.

Workshop Format

This workshop will provide valuable insights into the development and use of metrics to monitor progress and contribution of your various research and partnership activities. This will include metrics to demonstrate how these activities contribute to corporate results and/or the university role in economic development. The workshop will be highly participatory with case studies and discussion with experts.

Agenda Highlights

The workshop will focus on three primary areas:

  1. Overview of Current Metrics Systems.
Previous work to quantify thevalue of the research enterprise will be discussed as will systems used to
evaluate effectiveness of research centers and consortia.
  2. Case Studies.
Industrial and Academic practitioners will share their journeys in the establishment of measurement systems, the use of these systems to communicate with key stakeholders and metrics can be used as part of an overall management system. Presenters from Eastman Chemical Company, Ohio State University, John Deere and others will present their approaches and learnings in developing a measurement systems.

During the workshop key questions that will be addressed include:

  • What systems of measurement of value creation are already available?
  • How does one determine which measures and systems are appropriate
    for their situation?
  • How do you tie the metrics into larger messaging activities?
  • How do you maintain a system that is simple but credible for demonstration of value?
  • What is the appropriate mix of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ metrics?
