UIDP Academy Workshop: Strategic Use of Gift Agreements

April 16, 2018 @ 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm EDT

This workshop will be held at UIDP26 in San Jose, CA. This workshop will be highly participatory with case studies from corporate partners and universities, and discussion with experts in gift and grant criteria.

Workshop Overview

Gift agreements are a mechanism for industry support to universities.  In recent years, creative approaches for gift agreements to fund university research have been tried. This workshop will consider appropriate approaches for using these agreements and how both parties can benefit from employing gift agreements. Discussion will include consideration of IP, indirect costs, publication, and reporting.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is targeted to both company and university representatives that are responsible for preparing and reviewing gift and grant agreements.  This includes representatives from offices of sponsored research, corporate relations/engagement, university relations, and research and business development.

In order to maximize direct engagement among attendees and speakers, attendance is limited.

Agenda Highlights

The workshop will address several areas including:

  • Why companies choose providing support through gift agreements rather than traditional sponsored research grant/contract agreements
  • The appropriate classification and processing of external funding – gifts, grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts
  • Acceptable and unacceptable gift restrictions
  • Gift fees versus indirect costs
  • Use of intermediary organizations for domestic and international grant making
  • Use of gift agreements for consortium program and affiliates memberships
  • Tax considerations – charitable deductions vs R&D deductions & credits, etc.
  • Participation in research activities as an aspect of philanthropic stewardship
Onsite/walk-in registrations will be accepted.
Online registration for this workshop is now closed.
