SUMMARY:UIDP Webinar: Tax-Exempt Bonds and Sponsored Research | What You Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:Tax-exempt bonds offer powerful\, low-cost capital for research facilities\, but using that space for industry-sponsored research can trigger complicated tax compliance issues if not structured correctly. This webinar breaks down when\, why\, and how tax-exempt bond rules intersect with sponsored research agreements\, including what constitutes “private business use” and the IRS safe harbors that allow academic–industry collaboration to proceed without jeopardizing tax-exempt status. This webinar is open to UIDP member and non-member representatives.

SUMMARY:Actions Identifying Opportunities to Dramatically Improve AI Efficiency: A UIDP Workshop
DESCRIPTION:UIDP\, with support from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF Award #2534301)\, will convene researchers\, entrepreneurs\, and commercial providers of AI to accelerate the adoption of translation-ready research results that can improve the overall efficiency of commercial AI/ML workloads. The premise of the workshop is that researchers have developed technologies that have the potential to collectively deliver multiple orders of magnitude in improvement in the efficiency with which AI/ML workloads are fielded. Rapid adoption of these technologies can\, in turn\, improve U.S. competitiveness in the AI space\, e.g.\, by addressing near term limitations on energy supplies\, accelerating time to market of new models\, etc.

SUMMARY:Expanding STEM PhD Funding Streams: A UIDP Listening Session
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the University of Minnesota to help forge the future of the U.S. research ecosystem. Findings from this one-day\, invitation-only listening session will inform UIDP’s initiative to develop a U.S. framework for jointly funded doctoral fellowships. Delegates will help identify critical gaps and barriers to effective partnerships and brainstorm ideas for non-traditional\, high-impact approaches to increasing industry investments in U.S. doctoral studies. \nThis listening session is funded under a U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) award and aims to assess the viability of a U.S.-based pilot program where Ph.D. students would be supported jointly by government and industry partners.
