Short Course: Strategic Doing: Ten Skills for Agile Leadership

University-industry collaborations can offer many benefits. However, they are not without risk. What would it look like if we had an open source "operating system” to reduce these risks and increase the productivity of our collaborations? What if we had a shared discipline to speed the formation of collaborations, move them quickly toward measurable outcomes, and make adjustments along the way. Developed by Ed Morrison and incubated at Purdue since 2005, Strategic Doing fills this gap and this open source discipline is now offered through a national network of universities. Participants in this interactive workshop will be introduced to Strategic Doing through a simulation game, specifically designed for UIDP members, and will walk you through the process of developing a strategic action plan to guide new collaborations..

REACH for Commercialization™: Narrowing the Gender Gap in Tech Transfer

REACH for Commercialization™, the signature program of Ohio State ADVANCE, is the culmination of 10 years of development, reiteration and refinement.  REACH was developed under the auspices of a National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation award in 2008. The program is a cohort-based model of experiential learning that addresses the persistent gender gap in the innovation ecosphere.  REACH focuses on developing and sustaining networks to build knowledge, remove barriers and increase the participation of women in technology transfer, patenting and entrepreneurship.   Since inception, six cohorts, totaling 88 women faculty and postdoctoral scholars have participated in the REACH program.  Our data reveal that in aggregate, the invention disclosure rate has doubled after participating in REACH.  In this session we will review the evolution of the program from a basic workshop series to a continuous learning, mentoring and networking opportunity.  Together with our partner, Rev1 Ventures, we will share metrics, key insights, lessons learned and plans for future development and expansion of the program.

Creating the ‘Future of Work’ Ecosystem:  A Two-Year and Four-Year Collaborative Approach

The ‘Future of Work’ is now and our students and industry partners require the same from higher education:   meaningful and collaborative partnerships that seamlessly allow traditional and non-traditional students on ramps to in-demand careers and off-ramps to sustained economic mobility.  This session will outline how the Central Ohio Compact, convened by Columbus State Community College, with 4-year higher education, K12, and industry partners, have come together to create and sustain this new knowledge economy ecosystem.

Developing PhD Talent: A National, Multi-Stakeholder Initiative

Reports from the private sector cite challenges in recruiting, training and retaining talent as a constraint on industry growth. Meanwhile, graduate students and postdocs express frustration with a lack of exposure to—and preparation for—the wide variety of career paths available. This initiative brings together university leadership, graduate and postdoctoral educators, career and professional development specialists, scientific societies, national funders, policy makers and employers to transform the training of PhD scientists for efficient transitions into the scientific workforce. This UIDP session will introduce the initiative and share outcomes of an NSF/HHMI-supported, multi-stakeholder workshop on the gaps and challenges in enhancing the career development of PhDs.
