3-Minute Read | Prompting LIA: Get More Value From UIDP’s AI Assistant

March 10, 2026—In today’s fast-paced world of university-industry partnerships, structured access to relevant information can support more informed and timely decisions. LIA—UIDP’s AI-enabled knowledge assistant—provides members with a structured way to access and synthesize UIDP publications, guides, and institutional knowledge.
Available exclusively to members, LIA draws from UIDP’s 20 years of accumulated knowledge to generate multi-source responses based on user prompts. Members may find that the quality of output depends less on the tool itself and more on how questions are framed. Prompts that include context, constraints, and a clear objective often produce more strategic and actionable responses. Rather than asking for a single document or a quick fact, context-rich prompting invites synthesis across UIDP’s deep library of resources and delivers more tailored guidance.
Case in Point: The 3-Month Plan Prompt
A recent prompt, shared by a UIDP member, illustrates this approach in practice. The member asked LIA: As a new university partner, how do I create a 3-month plan to intake and leverage the resources that UIDP has to offer?
Rather than returning a simple answer, LIA generated a structured, month-by-month roadmap outlining priority resources, sequencing recommendations, and suggested engagement milestones. UIDP member representatives can download the full chat log found on the Ask LIA page. (Not a member? Contact us at info@uidp.net or visit uidp.org/membership.)
Several elements contributed to the usefulness of the response:
- Role clarity and context. The prompt began by clearly stating the user’s relationship with UIDP (As a new university partner…). This immediately framed the response. LIA did not need to guess the user’s familiarity level, institutional role, or starting point. Including role-based context allowed the response to be tailored for appropriate depth and tone.
- Defined time horizon. Specifying a three-month time frame provided LIA a natural structure for organizing the response. Rather than offering a generic list of resources, LIA produced a phased roadmap. Time-bounded prompts often yield more actionable outputs.
- Goal-oriented request. The prompt focused on how to apply resources, not simply what resources exist. This distinction encouraged synthesis—connecting multiple UIDP tools into a coherent engagement strategy—rather than simple retrieval.
- Permission to synthesize. The prompt invited LIA to draw across UIDP materials. The resulting response referenced multiple resources (the Researcher Guidebook, Perspectives Series, and Partnership Continuum) and integrated them into a coherent plan. Prompts that ask for comparison, prioritization, or planning tend to yield more integrated outputs.
Why It Matters
AI-enabled tools are increasingly used in professional settings. When treated as structured reasoning partners rather than search engines, tools like LIA can help members move more efficiently from question to action. Context-based prompting enables users to see connections across UIDP resources, identify priority pathways, and generate structured outputs that support practical decision-making.
For university-industry professionals working across complex partnership landscapes, the ability to articulate clear, context-rich prompts is becoming an important skill. As institutional knowledge bases grow and funding environments evolve, AI-assisted synthesis may help members navigate university–industry collaboration more effectively.
We invite UIDP member representatives to try LIA and share their experiences with us. Send your best prompts and chat logs to keith@uidp.net.
