3-Minute Read | UI Collab Adds Executive Recruitment Services to Strengthen the University–Industry Ecosystem

May 5, 2026—At a moment when universities and their industry partners are being asked to move faster, collaborate more deeply, and translate research into real-world impact with greater precision, one constraint continues to surface across institutions: having the right people in the right roles.

UI Collab, the wholly owned consulting subsidiary of UIDP, has taken a step to address that constraint. Through a strategic partnership with Gardner Innovation Search Partners (GISP) and Higher Talent, UI Collab now offers executive recruitment services to fill crucial roles in technology transfer, research administration, intellectual property, commercialization, and corporate engagement.

This move is more than an expansion of UI Collab services—it is a targeted response to a growing need for highly specialized leadership across research and innovation functions. With more than two decades of experience placing leaders in university and industry settings, Gardner Innovation Search Partners, together with Higher Talent, bring domain expertise that complements UI Collab’s advisory and consulting work, said Tony Boccanfuso, principal at UI Collab and president and CEO of UIDP.

“UI Collab was established to extend UIDP’s impact beyond convening and guidance—to provide hands-on support in building institutional capacity for partnership,” he said. “The addition of executive recruitment activities advances that vision.”

Universities, research institutions, corporations, nonprofits, and public-sector entities can all engage UI Collab not only to advise on partnership strategy, but also to help build leadership teams required to execute it. Services are available to both UIDP members and nonmembers, but UIDP members can benefit from deeper integration with the broader network and resources that support collaboration.

Leadership for the “In-Between” Functions

The work of a university-industry research partnership does not live solely in the lab or the boardroom. It also lives in the “in-between” functions managed by the offices and teams responsible for structuring agreements and translating discovery into application. These roles have always been important. Today, they are mission-critical.

Across the UIDP community, institutions are navigating leadership transitions, expanding portfolios of industry engagement, and facing increasing complexity in contracting and commercialization. The result is a growing need for leaders who can operate fluently across institutional boundaries—individuals who understand both the academic enterprise and the expectations of corporate partners.

For more than two decades, GISP has focused exclusively on placing leaders in technology transfer, commercialization, and research-related roles—positions that require both technical fluency and institutional savvy. By acquiring Gardner’s strategic assets, UI Collab is integrating that domain-specific expertise directly into its advisory platform.

“UI Collab has long focused on helping institutions design better partnerships. With our new executive recruitment capabilities, we can also help clients staff those partnerships with leaders who understand the complexity of the work and deliver results,” Boccanfuso said.

Beyond Traditional Search: Context Matters

Recognizing that executive recruitment is closely connected to institutional strategy, UI Collab’s consultants work closely with search committees and begin each engagement by defining roles to clarify reporting structures, strategic priorities, and the competencies required for success. Candidate sourcing draws on a specialized network built within the technology transfer, IP, and research administration communities—combined with direct outreach to professionals who may not be actively seeking new roles but represent strong strategic fits.

“UI Collab’s process is not simply about filling positions,” Boccanfuso said. “It is about identifying leaders who can navigate the organizational, cultural, and operational complexity inherent in university–industry collaboration. The effectiveness of partnership frameworks, contracting models, and engagement strategies ultimately depends on the people responsible for implementing them.”
