UL Research Institutes Welcomes James J. Hudgens, Ph.D., as New president and CEO

June 25, 25—UL Research Institutes, a global leader in safety science, has named James J. “Jim” Hudgens as its new president and chief executive officer, effective June 23, 2025. Hudgens brings more than 25 years of experience in advanced technology and national security research, positioning him to guide ULRI into its next era of innovation and impact.
Hudgens most recently served as senior vice president and director of the Georgia Tech Research Institute, where he led more than 3,000 employees and nearly doubled the organization’s revenue during his five-year tenure. His leadership was marked by strategic transformation, organizational growth and a commitment to research excellence. Prior to Georgia Tech, Hudgens led the Threat Intelligence Center at Sandia National Laboratories, where he managed key national security programs.
ULRI Chairman George Williams expressed confidence in Hudgens’ appointment, stating, “Jim brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record of leadership in research organizations, and we believe his strategic vision and leadership will inspire our teams and propel us to world-class success.”
At ULRI, Hudgens will focus on advancing the organization’s long-term strategy, strengthening global partnerships and raising awareness of ULRI’s pivotal role in safety science. He aims to attract top talent and foster collaboration across the organization’s diverse research areas, from fire mitigation and digital security to environmental health and advanced materials.
Hudgens succeeds Chris Cramer, who served as interim president and will continue as senior vice president and chief research officer. Hudgens shared his enthusiasm, saying, “I am honored to join ULRI and lead an organization so deeply committed to building a safer, more sustainable future for all.”
