UIDP Webinar: The MDS-Rely IUCRC | Advancing Materials Reliability Through Data Science

UIDP hosted an informative webinar on November 19 highlighting the Center for Materials Data Science for Reliability and Degradation (MDS-Rely), an IUCRC led by Case Western Reserve University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University. MDS-Rely unites faculty, students, government experts, and industry innovators to apply advanced data-science methods—such as machine learning and statistical modeling—to understand and predict how materials degrade and fail over time. This interdisciplinary collaboration is transforming how industries like energy, transportation, electronics, and defense design for greater reliability, durability, and cost-effectiveness in extreme environments.

Now preparing to expand to Phase II of NSF funding, MDS-Rely leaders showcased key research highlights, collaboration successes, and opportunities to engage in its next phase of impactful, cross-sector research. Speakers shared research highlights, discussed how they foster close collaboration between researchers and member partners, and outlined opportunities for engagement in the next phase of the project.

The webinar focused primarily on:

  • Exploring the MDS-Rely IUCRC: Learning how this NSF-supported center brings together academia, industry, and government to apply data science for advancing materials reliability and performance.
  • Research and Industry Impact: Hearing from center leaders as they showcase key research achievements, real-world applications, and success stories from partnerships that drive innovation across multiple sectors.
  • Looking Ahead to Phase II: Discovering opportunities to engage in MDS-Rely’s next phase of collaboration, including pathways for partnership, workforce development, and letters of commitment to support continued growth.

This webinar was open to member and non-member representatives.
