This workshop will be held at UIDP25 in Detroit. In this workshop, we will hear from industry and university representatives who have formed large partnerships and explore what it takes to make these endeavors successful.

Workshop Overview

Large University-Corporate partnerships are often in the news, but what went into making them and is the value proposition to my organization worth pursuing? In this workshop, we will have some of the architects of these partnerships discuss how they came about and what went into building them. Through a series of presentations, exercises, and discussions, company and university attendees will build a shared understanding of the opportunities and challenges in forming large value partnerships and, importantly, discuss how to maintain and sustain partnerships over the longer term.

Workshop Format

This workshop will provide valuable insights into how large value partnerships are formed and managed. The workshop will be highly participatory with case studies, discussion with experts who have created and managed university-company partnerships, and exploration of the structures, processes, people and skills associated with successful partnerships.

Agenda Highlights

The workshop will focus on three primary areas:

1. Value Proposition for Large University-Company Partnerships. Examination of the value proposition for both parties. While the benefits can be significant, the effort and resources required to build a successful partnership need to be considered.
2. Creating Large Value Partnerships. How partnerships are initiated and what ingredients are needed to build a successful large value partnership. How do these partnerships vary and what are the key differences between large strategic partnerships and other partnerships? What is the potential role of government in forming large partnerships?
3. Maintaining Large Value Partnerships. Once formed, what university and company structures and processes are required to sustain the partnership. How are changes in university or company priorities managed? How are changes in leadership handled and effective dialogue maintained between the academic and corporate cultures?

During the workshop key questions that will be addressed include:

• How are partnerships initiated? Who connects with whom?
• How long does formation take? Do existing relationships scale or is an entirely different model needed.
• What is necessary to keep the partnership ongoing? Dedicated staff?
• Multiple partnerships? Does each one get easier or once accomplished is there an intentional degree of exclusivity?
• What is the potential role of government in facilitating the formation of large value partnerships?

Who Should Attend

This workshop is targeted to corporate and academic representatives with responsibility for identifying, sponsoring, or day to day management of large value university-company partnerships. This includes representatives of Technology R&D, Economic Development, University Relations, Faculty, or anyone interested in leading practices in large scale partnerships.

In order to maximize direct engagement among attendees and speakers, attendance is limited.
