Contracting with National Labs: a UIDP Academy event

Want to improve the way you manage your collaborative research agreements? Looking to better understand how agreements with national labs are structured and negotiated? Working in Government and interesting in improving the way you manage university-industry collaborations? This UIDP Academy Workshop is for you!

Leaders in the public and private sectors have long recognized strategic government-university-industry (G-U-I) research collaborations are critical to advancing a nation’s commercialization portfolio, and its overall economic competitiveness. Today, the US Department of Energy’s national labs routinely respond to the needs of modern scientific progress by serving as platforms for large-scale multidisciplinary work. As the labs’ research portfolios have grown more inclusive to reflect the demands of modern science, they are increasingly well positioned for partnering with universities to respond to the technology needs of US industries.

OVERVIEW

The National Laboratories possess tremendous assets – both intellectual and physical – that companies and universities seek to leverage. Representatives from academia, government and industry are pursuing partnering strategies that serve the various sectors and contracting is a key aspect affecting these collaborations. The next UIDP Academy offering will focus on contracting issues between universities, industry, and DOE national laboratories.

FOCUS

UIDP Academy events bring together practitioners to discuss effective strategies and common sticking points within a mutually beneficial and respectful forum. The workshop will focus on a subset of the existing UIDP Contract Accords and the DOE Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). The UIDP Contract Accords address and begin to resolve commonly recognized areas that delay or derail research related agreement negotiations by articulating each party’s perspectives and approaches to particular contracting elements. The UIDP Contract Accords publication is a living document developed over the past decade by a strategically assembled and dedicated team of research administration professionals from academia and industry with the goal of significantly adding to the current body of knowledge.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This workshop is suitable for new and experienced national lab, university and industry negotiation practitioners who want to improve their ability to prepare and manage collaborative research agreements. It is also relevant to active researchers who seek a better understanding of how agreements are structured and negotiated; departmental administrators who are involved with sponsored research agreement deliberations; and government officials that manage university-industry collaborations.

WHEN & WHERE
