UIDP Webinar: ‘Call for Companies’ EMD Performance Materials & EvoNexus Webinar

UIDP will host an informative webinar about the EMD Performance Materials & EvoNexus partnership to advance science-based start-up companies on Wednesday, May 15 from 1–2 PM ET. Learn more about EMD Performance Materials’ targeted areas of interest and EvoNexus’ long-term (18 months and up to 2 years) in-residence incubator, as well as the application process and submission guidelines.
The EMD Performance Materials and EvoNexus call for companies is a targeted outreach to early stage companies with emerging technologies and use cases relevant to EMD Performance Materials’ core business. EMD Performance Materials offers specialty materials and technologies that are critical to the functioning of electronic displays, semiconductor devices, as well as decorative and functional coatings. Science and technology-based startups working on early stage solutions related to novel materials and technologies are encouraged to apply during this open round. Finalists will be considered for admission into the EvoNexus Technology Incubator/EMD Performance Materials portfolio and opportunities for early stage funding and additional EMD Performance Materials partnerships, which could include corporate R&D connections, early business unit exposure, technology steering and potential Beta customer trials

Michael Matthews is Director of Partnerships at EMD Performance Materials, focused on identifying and accelerating the commercialization of technologies in areas of strategic interest to EMD. He has over twenty years of experience in the electronic materials industry where he led the development and commercialization of new materials and technologies for the semiconductor packaging industry. Prior to joining EMD, Michael was the CEO of Ormet Circuits Inc, an electronic materials company in San Diego, CA that developed environmentally-friendly interconnect materials for the electronics industry. Ormet was purchased by EMD Performance Materials in 2015. Michael holds a BS in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY and an MBA from Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA.
Marco Thompson has been a significant contributor to EvoNexus since its inception, as an active board member, as well as mentoring startup companies in a Senior Executive in Residence position. As President of EvoNexus, Mr. Thompson is responsible for the oversight of all activities for the San Diego Technology and FinTech Incubators, including portfolio deal flow, admission to the program and mentoring the portfolio. Additionally, he is responsible for making strategic and institutional investor introductions to portfolio companies when they are prepared for an infusion of capital.
As a successful technology entrepreneur, investor and sales and marketing visionary, Mr. Thompson brings more than 44 years of experience in startup and executive leadership to EvoNexus. He is a familiar face in the boardrooms of numerous innovative San Diego companies and organizations. Mr. Thompson has founded several non-profit startup assistance organizations that provide networking, mentoring and funding opportunities to San Diego entrepreneurs. These include the San Diego Telecom Council (that later developed into the incubator EvoNexus) and San Diego Sport Innovators. Mr. Thompson has served as an Angel Investor for over 30 years, funding more than 50 companies. He is currently Managing Partner of an early stage venture capital firm Express Ventures. Early in his career, he founded Doctor Design an embedded engineering services firm that contracted for fortune 500 companies. The $50 million company was later sold to Integrated Systems which merged with Wind River (WIND) in 2009 and later merged with Intel (INTC) in 2009. Mr. Thompson stayed with the firm for 25 years before departing in 2009.
Mr. Thompson earned his BSEE in Applied Physics & Information Systems in 1979 from the University of California San Diego. In 2003 he was named the Alumni of the Year by UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering.
Rory Moore was the seed round investor, co-founder of Peregrine Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: PSMI), one of the world’s leading providers of radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for the wireless communications and aerospace markets. Peregrine ships millions of chips every week to cell phone manufacturers around the globe. Rory was also the seed round investor and founding CEO of Silicon Wave, Inc., now owned by Qualcomm. Silicon Wave produced the world’s first Bluetooth chips. Bluetooth chips are now in billions of devices from cell phones to automobiles. Rory was a co-founder of e-Fire.com, Georg!a Now and Optical River. In 2009 Rory founded a technology incubator called EvoNexus with Vice Admiral Walter Davis, a board member of CommNexus (now EvoNexus). In 2018, for all that he has done with EvoNexus, building a community to help give entrepreneurs a much better shot at success, Ernst & Young awarded Rory the Supporter of Entrepreneurship award. A University of Michigan graduate, Rory continues to make angel investments in technology firms throughout the region. His other passions include unlimited aerobatic competition flying, scuba diving and surfing.
