Center for Computational Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine (CCBGM): An NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research Center Webinar

June 5, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT

Using Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence to Advance Healthcare Discovery

The Center for Computational Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine (CCBGM) brings together the engineering and genomic biology strengths of the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (UIUC) with the world renowned expertise in individualized medicine and clinical research and practice of the Mayo Clinic to work on computationally challenging projects that use artificial intelligence, machine learning and system innovations to advance healthcare discovery. CCBGM is an Industry – University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) sponsored by the National Science Foundation. This long standing program encourages pre-competitive fundamental research in science, engineering, and technological by developing partnerships among industry, academe, and government.

The goal of the CCBGM is to leverage the power of data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and high-performance computation to advance healthcare discovery. In order to accomplish this there is a need for computational tools for big data analytics and machine learning models in genomic and genetic data analysis, patient specific data, imaging, compression, encryption, and data transfer. The center will address these needs using biological modeling, algorithm design, interface development and iterative optimization in direct collaboration with cutting-edge biology researchers analyzing real data.

This webinar will provide an overview of the center, our mission, our projects and opportunities to collaborate. Companies interested in our center include computer system vendors and developers, pharma and bio companies, hospitals and the insurance industry with a focus on pre-competitive technology, tools and methods.

Presenters

Ravi Iyer, Director

Ravishankar K. Iyer is a George and Ann Fisher Distinguished Professor of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds joint appointments in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science, in the Coordinated Science Laboratory (CSL), the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, and the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. He is also faculty Research Affiliate at the Mayo Clinic, and Yeoh Ghin Seng Distinguished Visiting Professor of the National University Health System, Singapore. Director, NSF-I/UCRC Center for Computational Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine.

Liewei Wang, Co-Director

Dr. Wang is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (MPET) at Mayo Clinic Rochester. She is the Co-Pl of the Mayo-NIH Pharmacogenomics Research Network (PGRNP), a network focused on identifying and understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying variation in drug response. Her research involves the application of high-throughput omics technologies to identify biomarkers that might help us individualize cancer therapies, understand mechanisms of drug action, and facilitate target identification and drug development. Dr. Wang is the Co-Director of the Mayo Pharmacogenomics Program within the Mayo Center for Individualized Medicine, where many of the endeavors involving personalized medicine have occurred. She is the recipient of a Mayo Clinic Alumni Association Edward C. Kendall Award and the Astellas Award in Translational Pharmacology from the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. She is also deeply involved in graduate education and is the Associate Director for the Mayo MPET graduate program.

About the NSF IUCRC Centers Webinar Series: Hosted by Iowa State and UIDP, the NSF IUCRC Program is supporting a new initiative to feature up to 10 IUCRC Centers in public webinars hosted by UIDP.org. Join us for bi-monthly, hour-long webinars to learn more about IUCRC Centers. During the webinars, leading researchers from the various sites will provide a brief overview of the current R&D efforts followed by an open discussion period where attendees can ask questions of the presenters.

For those unable to attend a webinar, all sessions will be recorded for future viewing.

UIDP members say our conferences are a primary avenue to share approaches, collaborate while establishing important connections, and solve contemporary partnership challenges. UIDP relies on member organizations to provide host facilities and support in-person conferences. Most conference sites are secured years in advance. If you have questions or are interested in hosting a UIDP conference, contact us at info@uidp.org.
