The Sony Research Award Program is an academic award program created to provide U.S. and Canadian universities funding for emerging and innovative technology research projects in collaboration with Sony’s own research division. The Program is comprised of the Faculty Innovation Award and the Focused Research Award within three broad subject categories: Information Technology, Devices & Materials, and Life Sciences.
With awards up to $150,000 per year for each accepted proposal, awards create new opportunities for university faculties to engage in pioneering research that could drive new technologies, industries and the future.

Mark V. Ortiz, is the Manager of the Strategy & Planning Office for Sony Corporation of America’s U.S. Research Center in San Jose, California which is Sony’s largest research center outside of Japan. Prior to working at Sony, Mark worked at a couple of medical device startups including one that he founded which was a digital health start-up launched in Silicon Valley. Prior to his startup activity, Mark held various senior positions in public companies, all in the medical device and high technology sectors, including Vice President of Marketing, Sales, Business Development, and Clinical Affairs. Mark has extensive experience developing and commercializing medical devices and drug/device combination products for various surgical and oncologic indications. Mark received his undergraduate degree in EE & CS from M.I.T., a Master degree in physics from the University of Oregon, and an MBA from Pepperdine University. Mark holds over a dozen U.S. patents and has published over a half dozen papers and book chapters on lasers and medical topics. Mark is an avid bicyclist, sailor, and scuba diver.
