UIDP Webinar: Tools to Address Research Security Challenges

Research security concerns are an increasingly significant challenge for companies and universities navigating a complex global landscape. With university-industry collaborations increasingly including international partners, organizations face greater risks of intellectual property (IP) theft, cyberattacks, and unauthorized access to sensitive and protected data.

This public webinar provided insights into new resources developed and released under the CHIPS and Science Act and allowed attendees to candidly discuss research security concerns and potential solutions. Participants learned about challenges that threaten competitiveness and have broader implications for national security and innovation ecosystems.

Under the CHIPS and Science Act, the National Science Foundation (NSF), through its Office of the Chief of Research Security Strategy and Policy (OCRSSP), established the independent Research Security and Integrity Information Sharing Analysis Organization (RSI-ISAO). This initiative empowers the U.S. research community—including higher education institutions, nonprofit research organizations, and for-profit entities—to make informed decisions, mitigate risks, and enhance collaboration with U.S. government agencies. The initiative also led to the creation of the Safeguarding the Entire Community in the U.S. Research Ecosystem (SECURE) Center, which serves as an information clearinghouse to help the research community identify and address foreign interference threats. Experts explained these recent changes and their potential impact on U-I collaborations, shared insights, and answered participant questions.
