Workshop Overview

Basic
In 1951, the Stanford University Dean of Engineering launched the world’s first university research park as a place where companies and universities could work together. Since then, the university research park model has expanded across the globe and morphed into fully mixed-use innovation districts, startup zones and tech towns, where universities and corporations live, work and grow.

At this workshop, you will learn from experts across the country how to find champions, funding, and stakeholders for university research parks/innovation districts and how new models of university-engagement and place making are reshaping university-corporate partnering in fields from bio health to data science.

Format

This highly participatory workshop will benefit attendees through presentations and panel discussions by academic and industry research leaders, especially those planning or operating research parks, innovation districts or interested in connecting with the local community. Presenters will highlight common ways to plan, activate and manage these projects as part of a university’s or other anchor institution’s corporate and community engagement strategy.

Agenda Highlights

The workshop will focus on these primary areas:
1. The Value of a Research Park/Innovation District to Universities in Enhancing Corporate and Community Relations
2. Challenges and Opportunities: It’s Not About the Real Estate
3. Managing Expectations from Internal and External Stakeholders

During the workshop key questions that will be addressed include:

  • How are research parks and innovation districts governed? Who are the stakeholders?
  • What are some master planning and building design concepts that need to be considered?
  • How do I finance and sustain a research park and how does it facilitate corporate engagement?
  • What is necessary to keep the park/innovation district growing
  • What is the potential role of government in facilitating the formation of research parks/innovation districts?
