UIDP Academy: Innovation Centers Workshop

April 24, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - April 25, 2017 @ 12:00 pm EDT

This workshop will provide valuable insights into the organization, financing, management and strategic benefits of Innovation Centers.  The workshop will be highly participatory with case studies, discussion with experts who have created and managed innovation centers and exploration of issues such as design, finance and other human factor issues associated with successful execution of innovation centers.

Workshop Overview

The subject of innovation is ‘top of mind’ to practitioners in both the public and private sectors. It is well recognized that the collaboration necessary for effective innovation is a ‘full contact sport’ that requires close interaction. A leading practice in this space is the establishment of innovation centers where a diverse group of collaborators are brought together to facilitate this interaction. Such collaboration is a complex endeavor requiring alignment of goals, transparent decision-making and project selection processes, while enabling development of intellectual property that can be exploited to the advantage of all partners.

Registration is now closed.

Workshop Focus

The workshop will focus on three primary areas:

  1. Innovation Center Case Studies. Leaders of innovation centers from diverse areas will share the motivation, management and key learnings associated with innovation centers.
  2. Creating Innovation Centers. Innovation center leaders will discuss the ‘nuts and bolts’ associated with gaining support for, establishment of and ongoing management of innovation centers.
  3. Facilities design and finance. Establishing the innovation center, enlisting partners and establishing the management processes is only the beginning of the journey. To be successful the human factors associated with the facilities and mechanisms to fund the infrastructure must be optimized. Current trends and practices in these areas will be emphasized.

During these discussions key questions that will be addressed include:

  • Rationale and case for change in establishing an innovation center
  • Aligning of interests including vision, mission and objectives
  • Governance including leadership, decision making associated with funding and outcomes/accountability
  • Managing IP, confidentiality, data access and other information sharing
  • Key learnings and unexpected problems encountered
