When to Approach Industry

Partnering with Industry: Best Practices Module, Page 22

Transcript of Interview with Mark Breedlove, Vice President, Vascular Division, Cook Medical
(Vice President and Global Leader for the Peripheral Interventional Division, Cook Medical, at time of interview)

I think the other thing that we get asked a lot is when should we bring an idea to industry? And that will vary. Every company is a little bit different. Some companies like to have a fully vetted product that has already gone through a clinical trial, maybe even regulatory approval. Other companies like to get in on the very early stages, as soon as you have an idea or a concept, companies like Cook, we like to engage with researchers very early in the process because we have a tremendous amount of expertise that we can bring to that, to help make it even better than the researcher himself or herself thought it could be. So I think it’s also important to understand how different companies operate. And we’re all a little bit different, but again, it starts with just having a conversation and not being afraid to engage the company, to try to figure out, “Who do I need to connect with in order to make this idea go further?”
