University Research Metrics: Case Study with Harris Corporation
December 1, 2016 @ 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm EST
Join Tom Wells from Harris Space and Intelligence Systems (SIS) as he presents a metrics case study, examining how Harris is tracking the impact and value of their collaborations using tools developed as part of the UIDP’s Metrics Project.
Just a few months ago, Tom attended a UIDP Metrics Project breakout session where he identified several new metrics tools he knew would help him make the case for whether or not specific collaborative projects were successful. At UIDP23 this October, he solicited meeting attendees’ input on the metrics he had selected and how he was implementing them. With this feedback, Harris SIS is now in the process of refining how they are going to track information about their collaborations using these and other UIDP metrics tools. On the webinar, Wells will share his experiences and insight on the process so far in our first metrics case study.
About Tom Wells
Tom is a strategic research manager for Harris Space and Intelligence Systems (SIS). His responsibilities include coordinating intellectual property development (he is the chairman of the Harris SIS patent committee), and managing a strategic research portfolio that includes university research.
About the Metrics Project
The original objective of the UIDP’s Metrics Project was to identify a robust, comprehensive list of metrics that organizations can track in order to help them assess the value their organization is getting out of a collaborative relationship with a specific university or company. The first phase of the project compiled the metrics different organizations use to assess a specific university-company collaboration. The resulting list was vetted and refined through UIDP’s review process and the result of this work is available in the current draft of the UIDP Metrics Quick Guide (only available to UIDP member reps in the Members-only Resource Center).
Now, the metrics project is doing a deeper dive into how metrics can be used for strategic decision making, and are working to revise the quick guide draft to highlight a specific subset of metrics and how to use them.
